The Prismatic Arts Festival, Halifax’s arts festival celebrating the work of Indigenous artists and artists of colour from across the country, returns to Kjipuktuk/Halifax from September 26 through October 9.
“This year’s slate of exceptionally talented, professional, Indigenous artists and artists of colour bring vibrant offerings through a myriad of experiences and opportunities for audiences in Kjipuktuk/Halifax,” say organizers in a media release.
Among the headliners, this year is the Atlantic Canada debut of TRIA Theatres’ King Gilgamesh & the Man of the Wild, a one-act theatre-music production based on Arabic Jazz that tells the present-day story of a friendship interwoven with the ancient Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh.
Also on tap this year are the critically acclaimed and Grammy Award-nominated Afro-Indigenous artist Mumu Fresh, Cuban-Canadian multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Ali Enriquez, dance artist Shion Skye Carter, and Halifax’s Youth Poet Laureate, 17-year-old Dáminà AwóyÃgà , who will perform a combination of poetry, music, and dance.
In addition, Vancouver-based Theatre Conspiracy will be in town with its critically acclaimed and groundbreaking theatrical production, Foreign Radical, a theatrical game that explores security, profiling, freedom of expression, and privacy in the age of cyber surveillance.
This year’s expanded lineup will also feature acts through a continuing series of performances outside the festival dates. This year’s Beyond The Festival will feature storyteller shalan joudry and choreographer Sarah Prosper in Winter Moons, award-winning African Nova Scotian singer and performer Linda Carvery and award-winning classically trained tenor, composer, ethnomusicologist, and activist Jeremy Dutcher.
