Jesse “The Punjabi Timbit” Singh brings his Baby Goat Comedy Tour to Halifax

The Halifax leg of Jesse Singh's tour will feature two shows at Good Robot Brewing on November 8 and The Carleton on November 10.

Comedian Jesse “The Punjabi Timbit” Singh kicks off the East Coast leg of his Baby Goat Comedy Tour with two shows in Halifax.

Come out and support independent comedy. You’ll get a great show, and you’ll leave feeling like you got to know me. Plus, we’re pretty broke. – Jesse Singh

The Halifax leg of Singh’s tour will feature two shows at two different venues, which Singh acknowledges is a bit of a “roll of the dice.”

The first show will be held at Good Robot Brewing on November 8, with its built-in community of comedy fans. “I’m excited because I heard great things about it and the people who run it,” Singh said. The second show will take place at The Carleton on November 10, a larger venue where he hopes to reach an even broader audience.

Singh’s Halifax performances will also not be a solo affair. In addition to fellow comedian Ethan O’Reilly, who has been part of the tour since the beginning, Singh is also working on bringing in a couple of Halifax-based comedians for the shows.

“I’m still working on confirming who could come out, but I’m connecting with people like Clare Belford and Jordan Foisy,” he says. “All of them are people I’ve known through comedy and met in Toronto when they first started but now work as writers for This Hour Has 22 Minutes.”

Singh also says that comedian Johnny Batta, who has also been on the tour, will not be able to make it for the East Coast shows.

While the shows will centre on Singh’s debut album, Baby Goat, released in late 2023, audiences can expect more than just a rehash of the album’s content. “It’s a mix,” says Singh. “People will hear some material from the album, but I’m also sharing stories and bits that have developed since the album was released.”

When asked what drove him to be a comedian, Singh says it was from watching comedians like Russell Peters. “Seeing someone who looked like me telling stories that hit close to home was huge,” says Singh.

Singh remembers his first professional gig, which surprisingly took place in a packed comedy club, a rare experience for new comics. “I got on stage, no material prepared, just winged it. It went well, but then I bombed for about three years afterward,” he laughs. “But it was all part of finding my voice.”

Finding that voice, like this tour, has been a journey. Singh explains that while he emulated the comedians he admired earlier in his career, he’s now at the point where he is confident in sharing stories that reflect his experiences. “Now, I’m just trying to be myself on stage. I share stories that are meaningful to me, and I want people to see things through my lens,” he says.

Following his East Coast shows, Singh will return to the other side of the country for more shows in British Columbia and Manitoba.

Singh says that although it has been a financial investment, as an independent tour, he sees every show as a learning experience. “It’s all about building relationships with audiences,” he says. “Going to new towns and figuring out how to build an audience organically is nerve-wracking but also exciting. I believe in the grassroots approach, connecting with people directly, rather than just relying on social media.”

As for the future, Singh has his sights set on the U.S. comedy scene and a follow-up album. “I’m working on getting a visa to perform in the States,” he says. “And after this tour, I’ll definitely have enough new material for another album.”

His parting words to potential Halifax audiences are simple: “Come out and support independent comedy. You’ll get a great show, and you’ll leave feeling like you got to know me,” he says. “Plus, we’re pretty broke.”

But wait. What about Singh’s nickname, The Punjabi Timbit?

“Honestly, I wish I had a better background story,” laughs Singh. “I got made fun of because I started losing my hair very young, and someone said my head looked like an old-fashioned plain Timbit, and it just stuck.”

Jesse Singh presents The Baby Goat Comedy Tour at Good Robot Brewing (2736 Robie St, Halifax) on November 8 and The Carleton (1685 Argyle St, Halifax) on November 10. You can find more information on Singh and upcoming performances at linktr.ee or follow him on Instagram.
