While the Great Pacific Garbage Patch may receive considerable attention, much closer to home, we’ve got our own problem on Sable Island, off the southeast coast of Nova Scotia. Halifax’s Mocean Dance addresses the growing issue of marine debris polluting the shores and waters around the island with Sea Unseen, an immersive dance performance that balances art and activism.
Sable Island is both romantic and tragic. It’s a tragedy that lends itself well to dance. – Sara Coffin
“Sable Island is both romantic and tragic,” says Mocean co-artistic director Sara Coffin. “It’s a tragedy that lends itself well to dance. The overconsumption of single-use plastics and the way our waste has become entangled with the natural world makes for powerful storytelling. This tiny island reveals a much bigger story, one we cannot ignore.”
Halifax Presents contributing editor Mark Robins was live in the rehearsal hall for a sneak peek at Sea Unseen and to chat with Coffin and choreographer Lisa Langley to learn more.
Mocean Dance presents Sea Unseen at the Paul O’Regan Hall in the Halifax Central Library (5440 Spring Garden Rd, Halifax) on November 9 & 13, 2024. Admission is free. For more information or to register to attend, visit moceandance.com.
