For over 49 years, the Aeolian Singers choir has enjoyed presenting programs that have a narrative or a common thread connecting their audiences to an emotion, a memory, or a place in time.
This spring’s concert invites audiences to step into the dreamlike world of fairy tales—not simply to revisit familiar stories, but to explore the deeper truths they hold about identity, transformation, and power. “What do fairy tales tell us about ourselves, about the world around us, and why do they seemingly have such lasting power?” says Frances Farrell, the choir’s Director. “Why are heroines in, say, the Grimm fairy tales, often presented either as damsels in distress or wicked? These are a few of the questions I considered when developing the theme of this concert.” With rich harmonies, surprising rhythms, and a blend of playfulness and poignancy, the music traces a journey that challenges traditional narratives and embraces a more nuanced understanding of the self.
Throughout the program, the audience is drawn through forests and fantasies, across landscapes of uncertainty and revelation. The heroine at the heart of this musical journey is not content to remain trapped in roles written for her long ago. As the concert unfolds, she grows in confidence, questions expectations, and ultimately steps beyond the familiar path in search of her own voice. This concert is more than a series of songs—it’s a reimagining of the stories we inherit, and a celebration of the courage it takes to rewrite them.
