Event Details

The Upstream Orchestra presents an evening of sonic exploration on May 10 at the Joseph Strug Concert Hall at the Fountain School of Performing Arts. The event promises to be a captivating journey into the realm of experimental music, featuring the talents of Halifax’s finest musicians and new works by emerging Nova Scotian composers, expertly conducted by the incomparable Jeff Reilly.

At micro/MACRO, audiences can expect to experience the unfolding of miniature musical models into multiplexities of sonic exploitation, as brave improvisers expand and extrapolate new compositions into unheard forms. The Upstream Orchestra will delve into the possibilities presented by single-page propositions crafted by emerging composers; each musician is literate in contemporary classical and jazz performance techniques, and all are confident extemporizing soloists. The intentionally open-ended arrangements will allow these small seeds of musical concepts to expand in performance to the demands of the moment – from microscopic ideas grow large sonic forms for this large and unconventional ensemble.

The emerging composers, coached by Nova Scotia’s JUNO-nominated Amy Brandon, represent a variety of approaches and musical references, but for this event, all are prioritizing the integration of improvisation within compositional framework.

The performers feature many of Halifax’s foremost creative instrumentalists, a few exceptional visiting artists, and newly minted Haligonian musicians.

The group will enter into dialogue with the compositions in performance, under the direction of conductor Jeff Reilly, himself an accomplished improvising bass clarinetist and composer. The musical possibilities are vast, ranging from delicate and detailed arrangements to enveloping masses of complex sound, all played with the edge-of-seat intensity that in-the-moment creativity demands.

“To be able to do my part in releasing the concentrated energy of these nine emerging composers through the assembled forces of such a stellar group of accomplished and creative musicians in Upstream’s upcoming micro/MACRO project is truly an honour,” says Jeff Reilly, the conductor of the Upstream Orchestra. “This is not your ordinary orchestra, not your ordinary group of compositions, and not anything close to your ordinary orchestral live performance experience.”

The Upstream Orchestra comprises many of Halifax’s most skilled musicians, and for this special event, they will be joined by nine emerging composers, including several graduating students from the Fountain School of Performing Arts.
