The Tom Richards Trio will perform at the Halifax Central Library’s Paul O’Regan Hall on March 2, 2025, in a captivating, sensory-adapted concert celebrating the vibrant world of jazz.
Featuring trombonist Tom Richards, bassist Nicholas D’Amato, and drummer Mark Adam, the trio will blend original compositions with reimagined jazz standards, offering a musical experience that is innovative and deeply rooted in tradition. Their eclectic influences—ranging from classical and pop to avant-garde—create a rich interplay of melody, rhythm, and improvisation, crafting a narrative as intimate as it is expansive.
In addition to the concert, attendees are invited to experience Monophilia, an interactive art installation by Tom Richards, hosted on the fifth floor of the Halifax Central Library from March 2 to April 18. Free to the public, Monophilia immerses listeners in an auditory world where they can shape their musical journey. The installation features three mono-recorded records, celebrating a long-overlooked format while fostering dialogue between the hearing-abled and those with unilateral hearing loss. Designed for individual or simultaneous enjoyment, the records offer a shared story told through different perspectives, encouraging deep engagement with sound.
This performance is part of the Sensory-Accessible Concerts series presented by Cecilia Concerts and the Halifax Public Libraries. The popular free monthly series offers a safe and inclusive space for everyone to enjoy chamber music. Designed to be inclusive and welcoming, the series prioritizes accessibility for autistic, neurodivergent, and intellectually disabled community members and seniors experiencing age-related hearing and vision changes. However, the concerts are open to everyone, particularly those who may find traditional concert environments challenging. Hosted by pianist Jennifer King and Certified Music Therapist Anna Plaskett, each concert features low lighting, noise-reduction headphones, open spaces to move and dance, a quiet room, and a relaxed atmosphere where attendees can vocalize or move as they wish. Trained music therapists and dance artists from Phin Performing Arts are also on hand to assist, ensuring everyone can thoroughly enjoy the experience on their terms.
