Although this year’s complete Atlantic International Film Festival (AIFF) programme will not be released until August, the AIFF has announced that its 2024 edition will feature the premiere of three Atlantic Canadian-made feature-length films and a read-through of scenes from classic 1990s romcoms.
“I’m thrilled to share this list of world premieres, spotlighting work from the Atlantic provinces and showcasing the range of storytelling and talent of our filmmakers,” says Lisa Haller, director of programming at AIFF, in the release.
Monica’s News is the debut feature from filmmaker Pamela Gallant, who draws on childhood memories as a paper carrier in PEI to speak to the issues of today, crafting a portrait of the resilient women who fought for equality in her community.
Seven years in the making, Nik Sexton’s Skeet tracks the unlikely friendship of an ex-con and a Syrian newcomer as they face their demons and seek a fresh start in Newfoundland.
From Halifax’s Tara Thorne comes their sophomore feature, Lakeview. The film captures a girls’ weekend in all its tumultuous glory as a group of exes reassess their relationships with one another after a divorce.
In addition to these three premieres, AIFF will also present Live! Scripts Out Loud!, a read-through of scenes from classic 1990s romcoms. Scripts will include When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Sleepless in Seattle, and The Birdcage. The script readings will feature an all-star cast of comedy luminaries, including Heidi Brander, Katelyn McCulloch, Bob Mann, and Eugene Sampang.
The Atlantic International Film Festival is an eight-day celebration of cinema from all over the world. It features screenings of over 100 films, Q&As, receptions, panels, and industry events celebrating new and established filmmaking voices from Atlantic Canada and around the globe.
This year’s festival runs from September 11 to 18. Visit atlanticfilmfestival.ca for tickets and information.
