The Fabienne Colas Foundation is looking for the next generation of Black filmmakers from across Canada, including spots for five in Halifax.

The Being Black in Canada program is open to non-professionals aged 18-30 from the Black community who have demonstrated an interest in filmmaking and with career plans in the audiovisual field.

With the help of professional mentors, the program will take participants through the many steps of film production as they create their own 8-10 minute documentary short film with the theme of “Being Black in Canada.”

“Potential candidates have a dream to work in the audiovisual field but have not yet had the opportunity, due to social, economic, or cultural reasons,” say organizers.

The final works will be screened at the Foundation’s Black Film Festivals in Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, Calgary, Vancouver and Ottawa this year and next.

Created in 2012, Canada’s largest incubator dedicated to Black filmmakers has provided a voice and platform for dozens of creators who would not otherwise be seen or heard.

Applications are being accepted through April 18. Visit beingblackincanada.com for more information.
