The 44th edition of the Atlantic International Film Festival (AIFF) will showcase 97 feature and short films.
We are proud to celebrate the flourishing film and television industry in Atlantic Canada and offer audiences the buzz-worthy films from around the world that they are hungry for. – Martha Cooley
“With new and expanded partnerships with the Canadian Media Producers Association and Music Nova Scotia, and free public events at the Halifax Central Library, AIFF 2024 promises to be a vibrant event for both industry and audiences,” says AIFF’s executive director Martha Cooley in a media release.
According to the AIFF, approximately 61% of this year’s movies are directed and made by women-identifying and non-binary filmmakers. In addition, an estimated 36% are BIPOC-made, with 30% of the program comprising Atlantic-made films.
Highlights this year include the Atlantic Canada-made opening gala feature film Sharp Corner, directed by Nova Scotia’s Jason Buxton and starring Ben Foster and Cobie Smulders, Mike Downie’s four-part documentary The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal, the body horror film The Substance featuring a comeback by Demi Moore, and Cannes hit and Palme d’Or winner Anora, which will close out the festival.
Spanning from Portugal to China, the World Cinema program highlights feature films from around the world, including new works from Canadian talents, cinema auteurs and critically acclaimed international films making waves on the festival circuit.
“We are proud to celebrate the flourishing film and television industry in Atlantic Canada and offer audiences the buzz-worthy films from around the world that they are hungry for,” continues Cooley.
In addition to the films, AIFF will also host a series of special events in 2024, including five free industry events open to the public and two ticketed events featuring special guests.
The 2nd annual AIFF Filmmaker Lab returns to support ten emerging Atlantic Canadian filmmakers from Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and PEI, featuring new work spanning all genres.
For those outside Halifax, select Atlantic Canadian features and shorts will be available to stream in Atlantic Canada via AIFF Online from September 18-22. This gives online patrons an extra five days after the in-person festival to catch up on any films they may have missed.
Tickets for the 2024 AIFF screenings, special events, and festival passes are available now. Visit atlanticfilmfestival.ca for more information.
