Halifax-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Minnikin is charting new territory with his latest album, Anne Lorraine.
I’m kind of stepping out of my comfort zone with this record. It’s not what my fans are immediately going to recognize as coming from Gabriel. – Gabriel Minnikin
“I’m kind of stepping out of my comfort zone with this record,” he says. “It’s not what my fans are immediately going to recognize as coming from Gabriel.”
Anne Lorraine introduces a new sound for Minnikin, leaning into a more pop-oriented direction that emerged during the writing process and with producer Dan Ledwell. “I didn’t specifically set out to write pop songs,” says Minnikin. “But the songs I wrote just seemed to warrant a pop sensibility. The way we produced the record also leaned in that direction.”
At the album’s heart is its namesake, Anne Lorraine, a tribute to Minnikin’s partner. “It is a tip of my hat to my better half,” he says.
In addition to the personal connection with his partner, Minnikin says water plays a recurring role throughout the album. “There’s a flow to it, kind of like water,” he says. “Water shows up a lot on this record. I think it’s because I find it a good place to think, to listen, and to be aware of inspiration. It’s always been a comfort to me.”

The album’s cover art, featuring a ship, also ties into the aquatic theme. Interestingly, Minnikin captured the image years ago while exploring Nova Scotia’s South Shore, though he would digitally add the name Anne Lorraine specifically for the album. “I took that picture down in the South Shore, maybe Lunenburg or Bridgewater,” he says. “I’ve been holding onto it for years, waiting for the right project.”
When asked about his favourite track, Minnikin points to Navy Blue, a song he wrote about his grandfather. “It’s sentimental and close to my heart,” he says. “It’s got a strong pop feel, is fun, and it should be a single.”
Minnikin’s sixth album, Anne Lorraine, will be officially released at The Music Room on October 26. The show will include a mix of Minnikin’s past work and the entirety of Anne Lorraine performed live with a full band alongside his sister, Ruth Minnikin, and his partner, the album’s namesake. “I’m going to do some songs solo from my earlier albums, and then the second set will be the whole album, start to finish,” he says.
With the album now complete and ready to be released, Minnikin is excited to return to touring and promoting the new record. While the pandemic limited his ability to promote his previous album, Sweet Nothings, he’s already planning festival appearances and shows to bring Anne Lorraine to a broader audience.
Gabriel Minnikin will release Anne Lorraine on October 26 with a concert at The Music Room (6181 Lady Hammond Rd, Halifax). Those looking to attend can contact Minnikin through his Instagram account for tickets.
