“We’re especially pleased to welcome Denise Djokic back to Halifax for this concert. The trio’s program beautifully showcases the expressive depth of the piano trio genre and promises an engaging experience,” says Greg Morris, executive director of Cecilia Concerts, in a media release.

Named by Maclean’s magazine as one of the top “25 Canadians who are Changing our World” and by Elle magazine as one of “Canada’s Most Powerful Women,” Djokic has performed worldwide as a chamber musician and soloist with major orchestras. Djokic is a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she mentors a diverse group of young cellists and instrumentalists.

Joining Djokic is Julliard graduate violinist Janet Sung. Sung’s extensive career includes solo engagements with major orchestras. Sung is currently the head of strings, a violin professor at DePaul University School of Music in Chicago, and the artistic director of the Meadowmount School of Music, guiding emerging talent in the classical field.

Award-winning pianist and Julliard graduate Soyeon Kate Lee completes the trio. Lee has also performed with major orchestras worldwide and is now a piano faculty member at Julliard.

The evening’s program features Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio Opus 66 in C minor and Dinuk Wijeratne’s Love Triangle, which combines Western classical traditions with jazz and global influences. Also featured is Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2, a piece composed during World War II that reflects the composer’s response to the tragedies of his time.

“This performance brings together a unique blend of classical and contemporary pieces that will resonate with a wide range of musical tastes,” says Morris.

Cecilia Concerts presents the Lee-Sung-Djokic Trio at the Stage at St. Andrew’s (6036 Coburg Rd, Halifax) on November 16. Visit ceciliaconcerts.ca for tickets and information.
