The Halifax Urban Folk Festival (HUFF) returns for its 16th edition this fall, running from September 29 to October 5, 2025, with a lineup that blends acclaimed international acts with East Coast favourites.

We’re extremely happy to be celebrating with a diverse mix of talent that we truly believe has something for everyone. – Mike Campbell

Artistic director Mike Campbell says this year’s festival is one of the strongest yet. “We’re extremely happy to be celebrating with a diverse mix of talent that we truly believe has something for everyone,” says Campbell in a statement. “I’m especially thrilled that after a dozen years of trying, schedules finally aligned to bring Rhett Miller from The Old 97’s to town.”

Miller will perform on October 4 at The Carleton, the festival’s longtime anchor venue. He’ll be backed by the Halifax All Stars Band, with an opening songwriters circle featuring Aysanabee, Hearts of Kin and Jon Cornwall. Aysanabee will take the headline slot the night before, with Miller joining the pre-show circle alongside Deedee Austin and Brett Matthews.

HUFF expands this year to include performances at The Basement of the Economy Shoe Shop and The Seahorse Tavern, complementing its core programming at The Carleton.

The festival opens on September 29 with a songwriters circle featuring Dave Sampson, Mo Kenney and André Pettipas. It continues on September 30 with blues-themed storytelling from Charlie A’Court, Logan Richard and Joce Reyome. Other highlights include two performances by Irish Mythen (October 2), a set by Ray Bonneville with Geoff Arsenault (October 1), and a youth-focused finale on October 5.

Beyond The Carleton, Cape Breton’s Pretty Archie will play The Basement on October 2, while The Seahorse hosts Nick Earle & The Reckless Hearts (October 3) and The Monoxides (October 4), with both shows featuring guest acts.

Founded in 2010, HUFF is a not-for-profit society dedicated to celebrating the craft of songwriting in an urban festival setting. Over the years, it has hosted hundreds of performers from across Nova Scotia, Canada, and beyond.
