Halifax’s Neptune Theatre has announced twelve productions for the company’s 2023-2024 season.
“As theatres around the world are enjoying their first full seasons uninterrupted by lockdowns and closures, we really wanted Neptune’s 61st season to reflect on the human need to reconnect, to move forward,” says Neptune’s artistic director Jeremy Webb. “This season delivers everything that we seek from live theatre: laughter, tears, suspense and lots of music.”
The mainstage season opens with the Broadway hit comedy, The Play That Goes Wrong (Sep 26-Oct 22). Featuring Jonathan Torrens in his Neptune debut, the play follows the accident-prone thespians of The Cornley Drama Society who battle against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call.
It will be followed by the musical comedy Murder for Two (Oct 17-Nov 5). A co-production with Festival Antigonish, this 90-minute whodunit is a delightful mix of music, mystery and comedy.
The holiday season sees the return of Webb’s spin on the classic fairy tale Cinderella (Nov 21-Jan 7) and the 20th-anniversary production of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (Nov 29-Dec 30).
The new year starts with the Tony Award-winning Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Jan 30-Feb 25). Featuring The Lord of the Rings trilogy stars Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan, it follows two minor characters from Shakespeare’s Hamlet in an absurdist, existential tragicomedy by playwright Tom Stoppard.
Neptune will take it all off with its season closer, the heartwarming and upbeat The Full Monty (Mar 26-May 19), the pop-rock-musical send-up of gender expectations and stereotypes.
Other musical events in the season include Wannabe: The Return of the Spice Girls, The Argyle Street Kitchen Party and Rumour Has It: The Songbook of Adele.
Neptune’s Scotiabank Stage will feature Canadian plays, including Reneltta Arluk’s Pawakan Macbeth, Raven Dauda’s Dora Award-winning monodrama Addicted and the world premiere of Breton Lalama‘s apocalyptic dark comedy The Last Show On Earth.
