Neptune Theatre School’s Youth Performance Company (YPCo) will present the youth-friendly version of Heathers: The Musical (Teen Edition) at Neptune’s Scotiabank Studio Theatre.
This show is a musical that addresses heavy topics that are just as relevant to teens in 2024 as they were in 1989. – Laura Caswell
Based on the 1989 cult classic movie that deals with some dark subject matter, including bullying, teen suicide, sexual assault, and school violence, this teen version of the musical has toned down some of the raunchier content from the original, making it more youth-friendly while not glossing over the show’s more important themes.
“This show is a musical that addresses heavy topics that are just as relevant to teens in 2024 as they were in 1989,” says director Laura Caswell in a media release. “I’ve been so impressed with this whip-smart cast of 28 young actors who are handling subject matter like school-based violence, bullying, self-harm, and more with such sensitivity and thoughtfulness.”
The musical follows Veronica Sawyer, a new girl who arrives at Westerberg High School and must navigate the cutthroat social scene ruled over by the meanest girls in school: the Heathers.
This musical stage production features 28 actors aged 12-18 from across Nova Scotia. They are all part of Neptune’s YPCo, where students work with a professional creative team to hone their acting, singing, and dancing skills, culminating in a professionally designed production.
