In a media release, Neptune Theatre announced the casting for its production of Billy Elliot the Musical.
Included in the list are two young men, 10-year-old Donovan Colan and 12-year-old Wyatt Moss, who will share the title role in the production.
From Yarmouth, Colan, who turns eleven next month, was cast after attending boot camps earlier this year. The camps were designed to ensure the children were ready to audition for the rigorous roles in the play.
“We’re excited to have found Donovan to play Billy, locally, as well as twelve other cast members, through this process,” says Neptune Theatre’s artistic director and the show’s director, Jeremy Webb.
Colan already comes with an impressive list of stage and screen credits, including his professional stage debut for Neptune Theatre in the 2017 production of It’s a Wonderful Life.
Moss comes with his own impressive resume as a professional dancer and actor and is no stranger to the musical. The Waterloo resident is currently performing in the Stratford Festival production of Billy Elliot the Musical as both an ensemble member and understudy to the role of Billy.
In the media release, Neptune Theatre says the two young men will share the duties of playing the role equally through the production’s run.
“The boys are a great pair of performers and are supported by an incredible cast that sees a record 31 performers on stage,” says Webb.
Based on the hit 2000 film, Billy Elliot the Musical is set during the U.K. miners’ strike of the mid-1980s as it tells the story of a young boy who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. With music by Sir Elton John and a book and lyrics by Lee Hall, the Tony Award-winning musical will close the theatre company’s 2019-2020 season in April of next year.
Billy Elliot the Musical plays Neptune Theatre’s Fountain Hall (1593 Argyle St, Halifax) on April 14, 2020, and continues through June 7, 2020. Visit neptunetheatre.com for tickets and information.
