Over 20 productions vie for trophies at this year’s Merritt Awards

Halifax theatre companies Keep Good (Theatre) Company and Matchstick Theatre lead with nine nominations each for their productions of Dance Nation & Leaving Home, respectively.

In a media release, Theatre Nova Scotia announced that over 20 productions will compete for honours at the 2025 Robert Merritt Awards, which recognize excellence in the province’s professional theatre community.

Two Halifax theatre companies, Keep Good (Theatre) Company, in association with Heist, and Matchstick Theatre, lead the nominations with nine each for their productions of Dance Nation and Leaving Home, respectively.

Other Halifax theatre companies receiving multiple nominations include The Villains Theatre (Deepwater), Neptune Theatre (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Disney’s Frozen, Dear Rita, and Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead) and Shakespeare by the Sea (Alice in Wonderland and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night).

The annual awards, named after the late Dalhousie theatre professor Robert Merritt, will be presented during a ceremony at Dartmouth’s Alderney Landing Theatre on March 31, 2025. Visit theatrens.ca for tickets and more information.
