Shakespeare by the Sea resumes shows after COVID outbreak

An outbreak among four cast members of Twelfth Night resulted in the shuttering of both it and the company's second production, Alice in Wonderland, for nearly a week. With the cast members fully recovered, both shows are returning to their regular schedules.

While COVID-19 rarely makes the news anymore, an outbreak among the cast of Shakespeare by the Sea’s production of Twelfth Night proves the virus is still very much out there. The result was shuttering the production and the company’s second show, Alice in Wonderland, for nearly a week.

With the cast members fully recovered, both shows will return to their regular schedules, beginning tonight with Twelfth Night.

In Shakespeare by the Sea’s production of The Bard’s romantic comedy Twelfth Night, director and adapter Drew Douris-O’Hara was inspired by the vaudeville theatres of the early 20th century, in a show where just eight actors take on this story of mistaken identities.

Last seen in 2018, one of Shakespeare by the Sea’s most popular original creations, Alice in Wonderland, returns to the Cambridge Battery this year. It features Lewis Carroll’s classic characters in a trip down the rabbit hole with new plot twists and original musical numbers.

In addition to its two main stage productions this season, Shakespeare by the Sea will also present Unrehearsed Macbeth for one night, in which Shakespeare by the Sea actors learn only their lines, design their costumes, and “embrace the chaos of a live performance.”

Twelfth Night and Alice in Wonderland continues in repertory at the Cambridge Battery in Halifax’s Point Pleasant Park until August 31. Unrehearsed Macbeth plays on September 1. Visit shakespearebythesea.ca for tickets and information.
