Halifax duo Patrick & Daniels’s debut album, Good Vibes, drops on January 20 with an album release show at The Carleton that same day.

It’s really brought our new songs to a new level while still maintaining the authenticity of who we are both as artists and people.

In this Q&A, we learn more about the artists and the album.

You can find out more about Patrick & Daniels and their new album on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Spotify.

This interview has been edited.

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

We are Jesse Patrick and Tyler Daniels, aka Patrick & Daniels.

Jesse Patrick is no stranger to various music scenes across the country. From battle rap events to many collaborations, concerts, performances and workshops, Jesse brings the experience to the table. His debut album Old Soul New Vibe, launched in 2020, had songs nominated for three international singer-songwriter awards and three World Songwriter Awards. He also earned a nomination for Blues Recording of the Year in the 2021 Nova Scotia Music Awards.

Tyler Daniels, hailing from New Brunswick, came into the mix just after Patrick’s album finished production and made his Nova Scotia debut at the album launch party at Bearly’s House of Blues. Tyler brings youthful energy, charisma, wit, and big harmonies to the table. Coming from a thrash metal drumming background, Daniels has come into his own, not just as a new kind of percussionist – but earning a reputation as an exceptional vocalist.

Together this act is full of energy, humour, and real bromance.

How do you describe Good Vibes?

It’s just what the title says, an album full of tracks that give you good vibes in a collaborative effort between us, Justin Maki, Alexandra Rodgerson, and the production experience of Mark Howard. It’s brought our new songs to a new level while still maintaining the authenticity of who we are both as artists and people.

Why did you choose Good Vibes as the album title?

Patrick & Daniels release their debut album Good Vibes on January 20.

All three of us had different ideas about naming this record before recording it. When Justin finally arrived in Halifax to write and prepare this record a month prior, many titles were thrown out. Especially with Justin’s background of “flirtacious jazz-pop” and our Americana and blues influences, nothing stuck. That is until we wrote Good Vibes. Immediately after writing, we collectively agreed we knew our concept and title.

What was the inspiration for the album? Is there a theme?

While there was no real inspiration per se, as a collaborative effort, we each had a song or two we had already written to pitch. However, once we started writing together as a trio to make it more of a collaborative effort, the album took on a life of its own. The theme is self-realization and growth alongside positive messaging.

What is your favourite song to perform off the album, and why?

Jesse: My personal favourite is I’m allowed to Dream. Maybe this is me approaching my mid 30’s in that “what does the rest of my life look like” phase. I think it’s easy to lose sight that we all have passions, dreams, and fantasies, and no matter how old we get, we should never lose our dreams and perceptions.

Tyler: My favourite song to perform is the song I wrote for the album It’s Hard to Leave the Love of your Life. This song is very personal as it is a story about a back-and-forth relationship I was trying so hard to salvage. I was madly in love and emotionally drained. I didn’t know what else could be done to fix it. This song is my favourite to perform because it is a healthy way for me to vent my frustrations about the situation I was in, and it’s also vocally a lot of fun to get to show off some of my vocal power.

What’s next for Patrick & Daniels?

The next big move for us is Memphis, Clarksdale, and Nashville. We competed in the East Coast division of the international blues challenge. Our division winner was our friend Jon Hines. So we are going down to show our love for him and Joe Murphy’s Waterstreet Band while label shopping, auditioning, and networking.

We are also planning a summertime EP of 3-4 new songs. That will be a straight acoustic record while we decide how best to proceed with the next big project.

As much as we love the studio, we love performing more and want to do as much of that nationally and internationally as possible. So we will continue to host our jam night created to help elevate artists who want to jam with a band of pros for fun, offer mentorship and networking with various media pros we work with, like Jimmy Torres and Krista Fewer, to help direct artists on how to build things like EPK’s, media portfolios etc. We like to be active in our community that has supported us so much.

We want to make a special thank you to our entire team, who have worked so hard to help bring our dreams and creations to life, as well as all the media outlets that have spun our tunes, shared our posts, promoted our brand, and built our community presence.

But, most importantly, everyone who’s streamed our music, subscribed or followed our pages, and attended a performance. We love and appreciate every one of you.
