Halifax-based rapper Wave Lord‘s latest album, Life of a Rap Star, is available now. He celebrates the release on January 14 in a show with Arenye at Level8 Night Club.

It’s probably my greatest album to date. I’m very proud of how it turned out; it only raises the bar higher for my future projects.

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

My name’s Wave Lord; people call me Wave for short. I got the nickname way back in high school when people said I was on my “own wave” because I never followed trends and was comfortable being the outcast that could hang.

How do you describe Life of a Rap Star?

It’s probably my greatest album to date. I put so much work into this one, from writing the lyrics to spending countless hours in the studio with Jordan Metro. I’m very proud of how it turned out; it only raises the bar for future projects.

I was trying to think of a name for the album for a while, and then it hit me! I moved to Halifax in 2014 and have taken my music career seriously since 2015. Since then, I’ve grown year by year from a fish out of water nobody cared to know about to a big ass shark that makes fans jump, and rivals shut df up! I had a chip on my shoulder from then, and when I made the album, I felt like I was truly at a point where I’m showing people what it’s like to be a rap star.

What was the inspiration for the album? Is there a theme?

I’m from a tiny island in The Bahamas called Nassau. We don’t have a music scene there. I moved here for school initially, but I knew there would be at least an inkling of a music scene here in Halifax. Unfortunately, there’s not a big rap scene here at all, and since I started making music and doing shows here, I felt like I’m the only black rapper that’s really taking this seriously. So every year, I’m dropping something major. I don’t care if it does 100 or 10,000 views; I’ll make it quality, and I’ll make it hit hard.
So when I made Life of A Rap Star, I intended to show people who were unfamiliar with me or sleeping on me that this is my life. I’m doing this for real. And I’m really damn good at what I do.
That’s why the artwork shows people reaching out to me, but I pay them no mind; I’ve always been on my own wave and ain’t shit change.

What is your favourite song to perform off the album, and why?

No Durag, for sure! I love 40/40 as well. They are real club bangers. People go crazy when they hear No Durag. From that first bass drop, I love seeing the smug looks on hater’s faces wipe clean as they can’t help but rock to my beats and flow. Same for 40/40, but No Durag’s hook is super contagious, so the crowd usually jumps in on it, and they sometimes perform the song for me; it’s a great feeling.

What’s next for Wave Lord?

I’m working on a lot of different things. We’re in the works of reviving a local hip-hop series, bringing back the battle rap scene and starting the reboot of the IBEX podcast. I’ve got a tour in the planning stages for spring and another EP slated for a springtime release, but that’s an entire marketing campaign away.
