Halifax’s Mocean Dance will present Spring Blooms | The Dance of Life, featuring the premiere of its Communities in Mocean – Older Adults Dance Project.
In partnership with the Halifax Public Libraries and Northwood’s central location Community Recreation and Wellness Program, the “free showcase performances bring together communities of different life stages to celebrate dance across a spectrum of experience and emotion.”
In this community-driven creation program for seniors and older adults, funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, Mocean co-artistic director Sara Coffin, with a team of local dance artists, guided two groups at the Halifax Central Library and Northwood Central long term care home through a creative process for dance.
“Reaching older adults at different levels of independence, ability and mobility, the program aimed to share the benefits of dance for health and wellbeing while uplifting the stories and experiences of our elders that so rarely take center stage,” says Mocean Dance in a media release.
In the first free afternoon performance on March 23, Mocean will premiere the dances created and performed by the Northwood and Central Library cohorts for an audience of Northwood residents, friends and family. Youth from Halifax Dance’s Young Company will also take the stage.
On March 27, in addition to the dances created and performed by the two groups, the evening showcase at the Halifax Central Library will also feature short works by local dance artists Marrin Jessome and Meredith Kalaman and a collaboration by Solène Bernier, Deanna Johnston, I’thandi Munro, and Sarah Prosper.
