2b theatre company developing a new arts hub in central Halifax

Halifax’s 2b theatre has announced the development of a new arts hub in the former home of Video Difference on Quinpool Road. The theatre company moved into the now-closed video store in December last year, and even with renovations happening around them, they are already utilizing the space for themselves and others. But it is only the beginning of the transformation.

“Securing this space has had an immediate impact for 2b and has also begun to change the game for the wider arts community that so badly needs spaces like this,” says 2b artistic director Christian Barry in a media release.

According to the release, the theatre company has developed a multi-phase plan to renovate the building, including accessibility upgrades. Among the spaces is the former video store’s Criterion Studio, which will be redeveloped to house creation and rehearsal space for 2b and other companies to develop works. “We also have office spaces, meeting spaces, and two fully furnished apartments to provide short-term accommodations for visiting artists,” says Barry.

According to 2b theatre’s managing director, Louisa Adamson, the company is seeking help in the redevelopment and has established a GoFundMe to raise $20,000 for the project. “It’s been a long journey to get here, but the work is just getting started, and we need your help,” says Adamson.

Established 24 years ago, 2b theatre is the company behind shows such as Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story, The God That Comes and, more recently, the Springboard Festival, which this year featured Hannah Moscovitch’s latest work, Red Like Fruit. Since its inception nearly a quarter century ago, the internationally renowned theatre company has toured its original creations to 67 cities in 13 countries on five continents.
