Masuma Khan named new executive director of the Bus Stop Theatre Co-op

Khan will take over the role on June 1 following the departure of Sébastien Labelle, who led the organization for eight years.

The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op has announced Masuma Khan’s appointment as its new executive director.

According to a media release, Kahn was born and raised in Halifax and is a community organizer and artist who has worked in housing support and has years of experience in union governance. Breaking barriers in the local rap scene, she is also known as hip-hop artist General Kahn, releasing her first album, Wrath of Khan, in 2021. Poetry is an expression tied to her cultural practice as a Pashtun, and her art style is influenced by her lived experiences facing white supremacy, colonialism, Islamophobia, and ableism.

“I am incredibly honoured and excited to be the new executive director of the Bus Stop Theatre Co-op,” says Khan in the release. “I am dedicated to upholding the legacy Sébastien, the staff, and members have built together. I look forward to fostering new growth with our community.”

Khan will take over the role on June 1 following the departure of Sébastien Labelle, who led the organization for eight years. Labelle will remain on staff until the end of June to help with the transition.

“The future of the Bus Stop looks bright ahead thanks to the collective efforts of a large community of people who love what this space provides and stands for,” says Labelle. “I feel a great sense of accomplishment as I step back and a great sense of excitement about where it can go from here under Masuma’s leadership.”
