RuPaul’s Drag Race stars sashay their way to Halifax

Violet Chachki and Gottmik’s Drag Extravaganza tour comes to Halifax's Spatz Theatre on September 10.

Produced by Glitter & Grit Events, the show will feature Violet Chachki, the winner of 2015’s season seven of the popular reality television competition show and Gottmik, the first openly trans man to compete on Drag Race, who came in a shared third/fourth place in 2021’s season thirteen.

The September 10 show will feature local queer artists Elle Noir, Queera Bang, X, Diana B. Tease and DJ Not Applicable.

“What’s interesting about this show is it actually differs from the very formalized drag touring shows we normally see,” says producer Queera Bang, who will also perform in the local show.

“Violet and Gottmik were really looking to do drag shows like they would do in the clubs. They didn’t want a refined drag show but wanted there to be audience interaction and to have a connection to each city they were in. So that’s why they chose to also have local performers involved.”

Calling it a “hybrid,” Bang says it exists somewhere between the more formal touring drag shows and local drag shows.

“Violet and Gottmik have some lip sync battles that they’re planning to do during the show to really engage with the audience, which is definitely a little bit different than we normally see when other RuPaul stars come through,” they say.

While the show will most definitely resonate with fans, which will begin its 16th season in 2024, Bang says you don’t have to be intimately familiar with the reality television series to enjoy the touring show.

“You don’t necessarily have to be a Drag Race fan to see something you like at the show,” they say. “If you like fashion, dance, or art of any kind, this is the show for you. It’s a great opportunity to see this mix of two worlds that we don’t always get to see in Halifax. It’s going to be a special night, and I think it’ll be a show people will truly remember.”

The Violet and Gottmik Extravaganza Drag Tour plays at the Spatz Theatre in Halifax on September 10. Tickets are now available at TicketPro Atlantic.
