Introduce yourself to our readers. Where did the name Harmz come from?
The name Harmz has been a staple in my life for as long as I can remember. Often, people sought shortcuts to pronouncing names and began calling me ‘harm’. At some point, someone added a ‘Z’ to the end, perhaps to give it a more cooler sound. The first time I remember being called by this name was seven years ago when I was living in South Africa, where my musical journey began.
How do you describe your new EP, Better Watch?
The EP can best be described as a thrilling roller coaster ride, plunging listeners deep into the twists and turns of my consciousness. Each track offers its own surprise and sonic journey. For instance, Better Watch echoes the relentless grind of my creative spirit, underscoring the message that I’m ready to command respect in the East Coast music scene. With its six tracks, the EP is a rich blend of soul, ambition, and introspective growth, underpinning the essential message for fellow artists: never shy away from a challenge.
Why Better Watch as the title?
The title Better Watch is a statement to the music industry that I am a talent to be watched, so when people hear the EP, they better watch out.
What was the inspiration for the album? Is there a theme?
Since I started this musical journey, my personal experiences have been the driving force behind my songs. Better Watch is a culmination of my challenges, from the times I penned verses during school to watching my mother juggle two jobs. As I evolved as an artist, so did the skepticism and doubt from others. However, with each track in this EP, I’ve tried to encapsulate my resilience in my journey from being the underdog to proving every doubter wrong.
The overarching theme of this EP is about evolution and growth. I want listeners to sense my transformation – from my early days to where I stand today in the music scene. While there’s a bit of glamour attached to fame, the grind and reality behind it are what I’ve tried to emphasize. Through every beat and lyric, my ambition shines, aiming for a future where I remain relevant, respected, and at the top of my game. It’s a reflection of my relentless pursuit to carve a unique space for myself in the industry.
What is your favourite song to perform off the album, and why?
I would like to say All of the Sudden. Bigger Bigger has become my favourite song from the EP. It reminds me of my journey and showcases how far I’ve evolved as an artist. Frankly, its melody is captivating. I can play it on repeat and never get tired of it
In addition to the new EP, you’ve also launched your own label and production company, Przm. What was the impetus for this new venture?
My team and I reached a pivotal realization: in order to make meaningful progress, we needed to take action immediately, without procrastination. Instead of waiting for external validation, it was crucial that we find a representation that truly echoed our collective identity in the music industry. Rather than spending time and resources searching for a music label that might acknowledge our potential, we chose to validate ourselves. We decided to take our destiny into our own hands, underscoring our commitment to our art and our seriousness about our place in the industry.
What’s next for Harmz & Przm?
I’ll forever identify as an artist. However, a few months after the release of the EP and once the majority of the promotion has been done, I intend to momentarily leave the spotlight. My attention will pivot towards nurturing our label. The aim is to establish a stronger foundation and to scout and onboard promising artists, ensuring that our label not only stands for quality but also becomes a beacon for emerging talents seeking a platform.
