Rescheduled from September due to Hurricane Lee, Ukrainian pianist Illia Ovcharenko is the first to take to a local stage as he performs at St. Andrew’s United Church on November 22.

Winner of the 2022 Honens International Piano Competition, Ovcharenko will perform a curated mix of classical repertoire focusing on Ukrainian compositions, including pieces by composer Levko Revutsky. Ovcharenko will also perform the sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, Franz Liszt’s B-minor Sonata, and works of Frédéric Chopin.

Then, on November 26 at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium, the Ukrainian group DakhaBrakha will perform. Known for its sound that infuses traditional Ukrainian folk music with rhythms and instruments from across the globe, the quartet incorporates theatrical elements and traditional Ukrainian costumes.

“These concerts are not just performances, but a celebration of the rich musical fabric of Ukraine,” says Jules Chamberlain, chairperson of Cecilia Concerts. “We are honoured to bring Illia Ovcharenko’s masterful piano artistry and DakhaBrakha’s ground-breaking music and style to Halifax audiences.”
