Given the attention on that part of the world right now, it seems somehow fitting that the Ukrainian world music ensemble DakhaBrakha will perform in Halifax as part of Cecilia Concerts’ upcoming season.
Hailing from Kyiv, Ukraine, DakhaBrakha (meaning “give and take” in ancient Ukrainian) has been performing for two decades with its innovative approach to music incorporating a variety of instruments, such as the accordion, cello, and various percussion instruments, as well as traditional Ukrainian vocal techniques. The result is a distinctive fusion of cultures and musical styles.
“Audiences around the world have been captivated by the beauty, complexity, and strength of DakhaBrakha’s music, now we get to experience this incomparable ensemble here at home,” says Cecilia Concerts chairperson Jules Chamberlain. “They have always incorporated themes of a ‘Free Ukraine’ in their performances, and in context of the current conflict, their music and messages resonate even more.”
The Halifax concert will include diverse songs from DakhaBrakha’s extensive discography, which spans multiple albums and international collaborations. The show will consist of both fan favourites alongside new compositions. In addition to their musical performance, DakhaBrakha is known for its stage presence, including outfits inspired by traditional Ukrainian attire.
Cecilia Concerts presents DakhaBrakha as part of its 2023-2024 season at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium (6101 University Ave, Halifax) on November 26. Visit ceciliaconcerts.ca for tickets and information.
