Neptune Theatre has announced its production of Tom Stoppard’s existential tragicomedy Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead will move to Mirvish’s CAA Theatre in Toronto following its run in Halifax in early 2024.

“We are absolutely thrilled to bring Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead to Toronto,” director Jeremy Webb said in a media release.

“World-class theatre is being created and performed in Halifax, and we are confident that Toronto audiences will be enthralled by this Stoppard masterpiece,” Webb continued. “In putting together this show, we always knew that it needed to live past its initial run here at Neptune.”

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is a profound exploration of identity, fate, and the nature of existence. With its clever wordplay, witty banter, and existential musings, the play offers a fresh perspective on Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, inviting audiences to ponder life’s most profound questions.

Citing “unprecedented excitement” when the show was first announced for its initial run in Halifax, there is little doubt that much of that excitement and one of the big reasons for the move to Toronto comes from the show’s two stars, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan, best known for their roles in Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

“Boyd and Monaghan’s well established chemistry will bring these complex characters to life, providing audiences with an unforgettable theatrical experience,” says Neptune Theatre in the release.

Single tickets for the Halifax run of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead at Neptune Theatre from January 30 to February 25, 2024, will go on sale starting June 1, 2023. After that, the show will move to Mirvish’s CAA Theatre in Toronto from March 5 through March 24, 2024.
