Singing loud for all to hear: Neptune Theatre presents Elf: The Musical

Elf: The Musical runs from November 22 through January 8 on Neptune's Fountain Hall stage in downtown Halifax.

It’s easy to see why Halifax’s Neptune Theatre is singing particularly loud this holiday season. Not only are they spreading Christmas cheer by bringing back the delightful Elf: The Musical after a ten-year absence, but at the time of writing, they had already sold out more than two dozen shows and are reporting limited seats for many more. So if you don’t want to be a cotton-headed ninny muggins and miss out, your best bet right now, if you don’t already have tickets, is for January performances.

The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.
– Buddy the Elf

Based on the 2003 film starring Will Ferrell and James Caan, Elf: The Musical is the story of Buddy, who, as a young orphan, crawls into Santa’s bag and is transported to the North Pole. Subsequently raised as an elf, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making skills cause him to face the truth as he embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with a father on the naughty list and a half-brother who doesn’t believe in Santa, Buddy sets out to win over his new family and help New Yorkers remember the true meaning of Christmas.

For its 60th season, Neptune Theatre is returning to Elf: The Musical in its coveted holiday show slot.

With a mix of local and returning talent, the cast is led by Ryan Brown as Buddy, who was last seen as Eddie/Dr. Scott in The Rocky Horror Show, and marks Brown’s tenth production at Neptune.

“Halifax has become a second home to me, and Neptune Theatre has given me so many opportunities to grow and learn in my career, that I was thrilled to come back to play Buddy the Elf,” says Brown in the release. “Working with Jeremy is always so much fun. We first met working together as Lumiere and Cogsworth, and our creative chemistry clicked. I’m really excited to share this show with audiences, and I hope that they have as much fun as we are.”

In a surprising confession, show director Jeremy Webb confesses he is not the biggest Christmas fan but says when he is working on the show, his “heart grows two sizes,” and he leaves his Grinch-like tendencies behind.

“This year I am feeling extra sparkly and that’s because of Buddy The Elf,” says Webb. “It feels so right to bring Buddy back ten years later with this amazing new cast & creative team. I am sure, having spent a few weeks in the rehearsal hall, that this show will help you rekindle your Christmas Spirit.”

Elf: The Musical runs at Neptune Theatre’s Fountain Hall (1593 Argyle St, Halifax) from November 22 through January 8, 2023. Visit neptunetheatre.com for tickets and information.
